All Scripture used is the NKJV with the Restored Names and Titles.“Law” in the Scriptures refers to the Torah, which is the first five books (Genesis through Deuteronomy) of the Scriptures.

Matthew 5:17-20
17 “Do not think that I (Yahshua / Jesus) came to destroy the Torah (Law) or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the Torah (law) till all is fulfilled
.
19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

John 17:14 I (Yahshua) have given them Your (Torah and Myself the living) Word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them by Your Truth. Your Word is Truth. 18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I Sanctify Myself, that they also may be Sanctified by the Truth.

The Big Question

If Yahshua (Jesus) didn’t come to abolish the Torah (law), does that mean the Old Testament laws still apply to us today? (After all, we are a New Testament people!)

The answer is YES!
Because we are a New Covenant people, we are bound by the Spirit of the Torah (Law) – Just as the Messiah was.

Romans 7:4-6
4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the Torah (law) through the body of Messiah (Christ), that you may be married to another-- to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to Yahweh (God). 5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the Torah (law) were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. 6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter (written code).

So What Happened?

Under the others covenants “the law” (the Torah) convicted us and showed us our sin nature and need for a savior and the price for redemption was temporary (year to year).

The Torah (law) still exists but now is written on the hearts of believers, because the Torah (law) is fulfilled in Yahshua (Jesus) Messiah (Christ). Through the progressive Word of Yahweh (God), it is the Set-Apart (Holy) Spirit who now convicts us of sin.

John 16:7-9
7 “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me.”

Is the Torah (law) obsolete?

No! But the law is rather progressive.

The Torah (law) is now written on our hearts.

Hebrew 10:16-17
16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says Yahweh (the LORD): I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,”
17 then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

Jeremiah 31:33-34

33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says Yahweh (the LORD): I will put My Torah (law) in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their Elohim (God), and they shall be My people.
34 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know Yahweh (the LORD),’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says Yahweh (the LORD). For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

The Big Picture

Romans 7:1-25
1 Or do you not know, brethren [for I speak to those who know the Torah (law)], that the Torah (law) has dominion over a man as long as he lives? 2 For the woman who has a husband is bound by the Torah (law) to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the Torah (law) of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. 6 But now we have been delivered from the Torah (law), having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.
7 What shall we say then? Is the Torah (law) sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the Torah (law). For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.” 8 But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the Torah (law) sin was dead. 9 I was alive once without the Torah (law), but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. 10 And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death. 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me. 12 Therefore the Torah (law) is set-apart (holy), and the commandment set-apart (holy) and just and good.
13 Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful. 14 For we know that the Torah (law) is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the Torah (law) that it is good. 17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I delight in the Torah (law) of Yahweh (God) according to the inward man. 23 But I see another Torah (law) in my members, warring against the Torah (law) of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 I thank Yahweh (God)--through Yahshua (Jesus) Messiah (Christ) our Master (Lord)! So then, with the mind I myself serve the Torah (law) of Yahweh (God), but with the flesh the law of sin.

The Old Testament is Instructional.
The New Testament is Lifestyle.

The Ten Commandments are still the Ten Commandments

(You may think of them as ten categories of which all the Teaching and Instructions; i.e., the “Law” or Torah falls under.)

Exodus 20:13
“You shall not murder.”

Matthew 5:21-22

21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder,’ and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment. 22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment.”

This is but just one example.

Under the Old it took action (doing) to sin, but under the New it’s even what you think that causes sin. Which kind of sin is harder to keep from committing — doing or thinking?

Hebrews 13:8-9
Yahshua Messiah (Jesus Christ) is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Yahshua (Jesus) is the Living Torah (Word).

John 1:1-2
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with Elohim (God), and the Word was Elohim (God). 2 He was in the beginning with Elohim (God).

Let us look at the Scriptures (Old and New) to find out what Yahweh and Yahshua have to say about Their Teaching and Instructions (Commandments, Torah or the Law).

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear Yahweh (God) and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all (whole duty). 14 For Yahweh (God) will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.

John 5:36-40
36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38 nor does His word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one He sent. 39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.”

Matthew 5:17-20

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Torah (Law) or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Torah (Law) until everything is accomplished. 19 Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the Torah (law), you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Romans 13:8-10
8 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the Torah (law).

Leviticus 19:18

“Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am Yahweh (the LORD).”

1 John 3:21-24

21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before Yahweh (God) 22 and receive from Him anything we ask, because we obey His commands and do what pleases Him. 23 And this is His command: to believe in the name of His Son, Yahshua (Jesus) Messiah (Christ), and to love one another as He commanded us. 24 Those who obey His commands live in Him, and He in them. And this is how we know that He lives in us: We know it by the Spirit He gave us.

1 John 5:1-5

1 Everyone who believes that Yahshua (Jesus) is the Messiah (Christ) is born of Yahweh (God), and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of Elohim (God): by loving Elohim (God) and carrying out his commands. 3 This is love for Elohim (God): to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of Yahweh (God) overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Yahshua (Jesus) is the Son of Yahweh (God).

Romans 2: 12-16

12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the Torah (law), and all who sin under the Torah (law) will be judged by the Torah (law). 13 For it is not those who hear the Torah (law) who are righteous in Yahweh’s (God’s) sight, but it is those who obey the Torah (law) who will be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the Torah [law], do by nature things required by the Torah [law], they are a Torah [law] for themselves, even though they do not have the Torah [law], 15 since they show that the requirements of the Torah [law] are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.) 16 This will take place on the day when Yahweh (God) will judge men’s secrets through Yahshua (Jesus) Messiah (Christ), as my gospel declares.

Acts 21:17-25
17 When we arrived at Jerusalem, the brothers received us warmly. 18 The next day Paul and the rest of us went to see James, and all the elders were present. 19 Paul greeted them and reported in detail what Yahweh (God) had done among the Gentiles through his ministry. 20 When they heard this, they praised Yahweh (God). Then they said to Paul: “You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews have believed, and all of them are zealous for the Torah (law). 21 They have been informed that you teach all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to turn away from Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or live according to our customs. 22 What shall we do? They will certainly hear that you have come, 23 so do what we tell you. There are four men with us who have made a vow. 24 Take these men, join in their purification rites and pay their expenses, so that they can have their heads shaved. Then everybody will know there is no truth in these reports about you, but that you yourself are living in obedience to the Torah (law). 25 As for the Gentile believers, we have written to them our decision that they should abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality.”

We see in Acts 21:17: Paul, the Elders and other Believers were obedient to the Torah (Law).

NOTE: In most instances, why didn’t the translators of Scripture capitalize the word “Law” when a passage refers to Yahweh’s Law? One other thing to watch out for is whose “law” the verse is about — man’s law or Yahweh’s Law.

Romans 3:27-31
27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the Torah (law)? No, but on that of faith. 28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the Torah (law). 29 Is Yahweh (God) the Elohim (God) of Jews only? Is He not the Elohim (God) of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30 since there is only one Elohim (God), who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. 31 Do we, then, nullify the Torah (law) by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the Torah (law).

If Paul did keep the Torah (Law) and teach others not to uphold the Torah (Law) what does this mean (according To Whom It May Concern — Scripture)?

Matthew 23:1-3
1 Then Yahshua (Jesus) spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, 2 saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.”

Yahshua (Jesus) in Matthew 23 is telling the people to follow (observe) Yahweh’s Torah (Law), but not the law of the Pharisees (man-made laws, customs and traditions). That they sit in “Moses’ seat means they should be teaching the Torah (Teaching and Instructions) or Law of Yahweh (God) and living it out (doing it or being doers of the Word) also.

James 1:7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Master (Lord); 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

So if Paul did teach one thing and do another, he was double-minded and unstable in all his ways. Could he receive anything from Yahshua (Jesus)? Or could it be that Paul’s writings have been taken, twisted and interpreted wrong with a bias?

2 Peter 3:15 and account that the longsuffering of our Master (Lord) is salvation--as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked;

Has Paul’s Letters been hard to understand, even twisted and have we inherited lies from our (spiritual) fathers!

Jeremiah 16:19 O Yahweh (LORD), my strength and my fortress, My refuge in the day of affliction, The Gentiles shall come to You From the ends of the earth and say, “Surely our fathers have inherited lies, Worthlessness and unprofitable things.”

Our flesh (carnal) is against the things of Yahweh (God) / Yahshua (Jesus), that is why we must die to flesh-self and the flesh way of thinking.

Romans 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against Elohim (God); for it is not subject to the law of Elohim (God), nor indeed can be.

2 Timothy 4:1
I charge you therefore before Elohim (God) and the Master (Lord) Yahshua (Jesus) Messiah (Christ), who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

2 Timothy 4:1-5
Is what we should all be about. Seek Truth for Truths’ Sake and He (Yahshua) will set you free.

The Law does not, does not, does not and never did save anyone! Only the Blood of the Lamb of Yahweh, which is His Messiah Yahshua, can cover and forgive us of our sins!

So then you may want to ask what is all this stuff about the Law been all about? It’s about Relationship, the “If you love Me…” and etc. of Scripture. The Torah (Teaching and Instructions) or Law has been a guide (owner manual) for proper relationship with each other and most importantly Yahweh as it was to be before the fall and sin of man.

If we are saved, then we should want to do things Yahweh’s Way and not ours. Salvation is just the first step in the process of Sanctification. We are to be Set-Apart (Holy) as Yahweh / Yahshua is Set-Apart (Holy). So what does that mean? When we become obedient and live out the Law written on our heart, we will be and even look set-apart (holy) from the world.

LAW

Torah (Hebrew word that means; “law” or more correctly the “Teaching and Instructions”) means strictly a directory. Authoritative enactment (from Yahweh) is implied. The elements of the law already existed, but scattered and much obscured amidst incongruous usage which men’s passions had created. The law “was added because of the transgressions” of it, i.e., not to remove all transgressions, for the law rather stimulates the corrupt heart to disobedience (Romans 7:13), but to bring them out into clearer view (Gal 3:19; Romans 3:20 end, 4:15; 5:13; 7:7-9), to make men more conscious of their sins as being transgressions of the law, so to make them feel need and longing for the promised Savior (Gal 3:17-24), “the law was our schoolmaster (paidagoogos (NT: 3807), rather guardian-servant leading us to school), to bring us to Christ.” The law is closely connected with the promise to Abraham, “in thy seed shall all families of the earth be blessed” (Genesis 12:3). It witnessed to the evil in all men, from which the promised Seed should deliver men, and its provisions on the other hand were the chief fence by which Israel was kept separate from surrounding pagandom, the repository of divine revelation for the future good of the world, when the fullness of the time should come.
(From Fausset’s Bible Dictionary, Electronic Database Copyright (c) 1998 by Biblesoft)

LAW (Hebrew. tora, “teaching, instruction;” Greek. nomos). A term employed almost 200 times in the Bible and signifying the revealed will of (Yahweh) God with respect to human conduct. It includes all the divine commands and precepts for regulating man’s moral life without and within.
(From The New Unger’s Bible Dictionary. Originally published by Moody Press of Chicago, Illinois. Copyright (c) 1988.)

Law: An orderly system of rules and regulations by which a society is governed. In the Bible, particularly the Old Testament, a unique law code was established by direct revelation from (Yahweh) God to direct His people in their worship, in their relationship to Him, and in their social relationships with one another.

By contrast, the biblical concept was that law comes from (Yahweh) God, issues from His nature, and is (set-apart) holy, righteous, and good. Furthermore, at the outset of God’s ruling over Israel at Sinai, (Yahweh) God the great King gave His laws. These laws were binding on His people, and He upheld them. Furthermore, His laws were universal. Ancient oriental kings often tried to outdo their predecessors in image, economic power, and political influence. This was often their motivation in setting forth law codes. (Yahweh) God, however, depicts His law as an expression of His love for His people (Ex 19:5-6).
(From Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Copyright (c) 1986, Thomas Nelson Publishers)

The Greek word for “law” is nomos, derived from nemo, “to divide,” “distribute,” “apportion,” and generally meant anything established, anything received by usage, a custom, usage, law; in the New Testament a command, law.
(From International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia, Electronic Database Copyright (c) 1996 by Biblesoft)

COMMANDMENT
Mitswah OT: 4687, “commandment.” This noun occurs 181 times in the Old Testament. Its first occurrence is in Genesis 26:5, where mitswah is synonymous with choq (“statute”) and Torah (“law”): “Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”
